Next week we’re working on a sound score for Shobana Jeyasingh Dance in a research and development project with King’s College London and the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. The project brings together choreography, robotics theory from KCL Informatics, and mechanical design from the Bartlett’s Interactive Architecture Lab.

The sound score is still on the drawing board, but will be the usual mix of Cycling ’74 Max and Ableton Live, with a bit of Max’s physics engine thrown in to explore some ideas of robotic underactuation. The audio setup will also be six-speaker ambisonic for a bit of surround-sound goodness.

The venue is the KCL Anatomy Museum, and it will be open to the public on Friday 3rd July, 2-4pm.

More information from the Interactive Architecture Lab, and a preview article at Dance UK.

Choreographic Inference, Berlin

I’m just back (well, as of a week ago) from the Berlin episode of the Choreographic Coding Labs, where a couple of dozen artists, coders, performers and musicians (with many people matching multiple roles) hung out and made cool stuff at Uferstudios for a few days, which then got shown/demonstrated at retune 2014. Some really interesting ideas took shape out of the minds of some very smart and creative people, all of whom I hope to see again some day.

Art Lab

We’re about to spend a week in Manchester, doing some teaching/presentation/mentoring duties for Art Lab, on behalf of CODE Creatives. I have a project proposal for the residency period, although that’s pretty much just an agenda of ideas for any downtime.

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance: TooMortal

We’ve just started work on a multichannel sound score for Shobana Jeyasingh’s new dance work TooMortal, a site-specific piece for historic churches in the UK, Venice and Stockholm.

Monomes and Monomatic at Makers’ Guild

mmb440

We are giving a short presentation at the next Makers’ Guild event: Making Sounds at the V & A on April 13th. Topics to be covered will probably include recent work with Monomatic and a bit of show-and-tell of performance techniques with the monome.

MaxMSP Showing and Telling

m4u_170

We’re workshopping, and gigging, at the M4_u (Max/MSP for Users) Convention, 13th to 14th of January, Phoenix Square, Leicester. The workshop is pretty much going to be a repeat of that given at the Cycling ’74 Expo – building an algorithmic step sequencer and abstract display system using Clojure. The gig will be monome-based, probably with some pulse sequencer action.

Clojure Workshop, Expo ’74, October

expo-74-logo

We are running a workshop on concurrent patchers and data structures with MaxMSP and Clojure at the Cycling ’74 Expo in Brooklyn, October 14-16. Details to follow. For that matter, details to be designed and coded.

Anyone who wants to get a flavour of how the workshop might pan out should check out the existing Python-for-MaxMSP package, and then close their eyes and try to imagine what that might look and feel like if the underlying language were Clojure rather than Python.

I’m anticipating that full-on functional programming techniques will be new to many MaxMSP users, and the uncompromising nature of the Lisp syntax can also be a bit of a hurdle, so I’m planning to spend some workshop time getting up to speed on those aspects before looking at the concurrency features specific to Clojure itself.
