Gearhead/Alesis QuadraVerb {!components/__archivelogo} Pretty much the first of the multi-effects boxes, featuring versatile programming options and a respectable realtime control via MIDI with irritating pressure-sensitive buttons on the front panel and a system exclusive syntax which could best be described as inconvenient. A firmware upgrade converts a QuadraVerb into a ~~QuadraVerb Plus~~, which provides more algorithms, including tunable resonators and a one-shot sampler. The upgrade is (or was) basically free, so most QuadraVerbs circulating should already be Plusses. The QuadraVerb is rather long in the tooth these days (having been superceded by various other Alesis products, most obviously the ~~QuadraVerb 2~~), although the UK Distributor Mafia still sells them for $500 or so each. The sound quality is not stellar, but the grainy sound quality has a certain charm and does have its uses. Word of warning: the QuadraVerb has a "soft" MIDI Thru feature. I have never come across a Soft Thru which worked properly. This one is no exception. Place nothing downstream of it. Major bummer: enormous inline power-brick with nonstandard connectors.
