Idea/Concept: Michael Klien
Programming: Nick Rothwell
Technical Production: Dave Guy

Slattery's Lamp was presented in conjunction with EV+A 2004. A sentimental entity on a patch of green grass, Slattery's Lamp senses the environment in nearby Slattery's Pub through various hidden light, sound and temperature sensors throughout the pub. The information from the sensors is gathered, fed back into a computer then driven by artificial intelligence and funnelled into a single output and transferred to the lamp. "Slattery's Lamp is not a representation of a mind; it is a working mind," says Michael Klien. Challenging traditional perceptions Slattery's Lamp may at first glance appear to be broken or malfunctioning but it is in fact an intelligent mind, logging and reacting to the millions of bits of information it receives throughout the day. To fully perceive and engage with Slattery's Lamp is an exercise in trust.

Slattery's Lamp is now a >>permanent exhibit at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
